I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO// Be a Tattoo Artist and Studio Owner
I'm Not Supposed to... is a feature on SoloSeule showcasing interviews with ladies that are going against the grain and doing exactly what society says they shouldn't.
Myra Oh (@myraoh) is a charming, talented, and sought-after (hello 47.8k IG followers!) female tattooer based in Florida. She is known for her black and grey designs that mix traditional tattoo styles with softer floral elements. Her studio is filled with plants, minimal design, and the best soothing music for getting needles poked into you (think Best Coast and Real Estate on repeat). She recently opened her own studio, Swan Tattoo, in Jacksonville.
Who are you?
I’m Myra Oh, I’m a woman, a tattooer, a printmaker, an illustrator, a small business owner, a plant collector, and a Californian who loves Florida.
What’s your background?
I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for the first 20 years of my life. I started attending The Academy of Art’s weekend and summer classes in San Francisco when I was in the 9th grade. In 2002 I attended the Oxbow School, a single semester art program in Napa, Ca. I continued on to San Jose State University for a couple of years before dropping out. I started my tattoo apprenticeship when I moved to Jacksonville, Fl in the summer of 2007. My interest in tattooing started in high school when I began making friends that had tattoos and I went to a tattoo parlor for the first time.
What do you wish more women were doing?
I wish more women were pursuing careers and lifestyles that make them happy, without fear of judgment for adhering to or breaking social norms/gender roles.
What’s a common misconception about you?
I’m not aware of any misconceptions people might have about me, I don’t really know what people say about me, I hope only good things, haha.
What’s your favorite city in the world and why?
Tokyo, because of its ability to be calm and busy at the same time, the graceful flow of millions of people commuting around the city. So crowded, yet pleasant, I’ve never seen anything like it.
What’s a song you could listen to a thousand times on repeat?
“We Rule the School” by Belle & Sebastian
